There was an intriguing photo in my local paper this morning of a woman in Moscow trudging past a gathering of snowmen. I got curious and went looking. Turns out it’s an annual event in Moscow. Every year a site is selected and 100 or so snowmen are created. This year they are on display in front of the Natalia Sats Theatre, where performance artist and clown Slava Polunin was to stage his ‘Snowshow’ through January 28th.
It looks like this:
Now…how much fun is that? Well, the man in the leather jacket looks a little worried, actually. Maybe he’s seen too many Hellraiser films and is concerned that this fellow in the red scarf may be some frosty relative of Pinhead. But everyone else is having a grand time.
I love snowmen. But I almost never get to make them. You have to have the right kind of snow and focused time to make them. We rarely have enough of the right kind of snow to do anything like this and my children are always much more interested in sledding, or building forts, or having snowball fights.
But I love the idea of whole gatherings of snowpeople. They are beautiful and whimsical and strange. I hope to be involved in creating one someday.
